Applications

One layer of atmosphere, many things that depend on it

Urban Air Mobility is the application the center's founding concept develops in depth. It is one of several: the same boundary layer governs coastal and offshore operations, urban and rural contrasts, and the human systems that sit inside it.

01

Urban Air Mobility

UAM vehicles operate within the Atmospheric Boundary Layer, where interactions with the environment and human systems are strongest.

In the founding concept

  • eVTOLs, drones and air taxis in the ~50 m – 500 m operating zone
  • Intra-urban transport of goods
  • Medical emergencies
  • Surveillance

02

Human system interactions

The systems that low-altitude operations depend on, and the communities beneath them.

In the founding concept

  • Vertiports & infrastructure
  • Air traffic management (UTM)
  • Communication & navigation
  • Noise & community impact

03

Onshore / offshore interactions

The marine boundary layer and the coastline, where the low atmosphere changes character.

In the founding concept

  • Maritime operations
  • Offshore wind farms
  • Coastal winds & sea breezes
  • Coastal convection & weather

04

Urban Weather and Urban Energy Prediction

Coupling high-resolution urban weather models with building energy models to forecast how city heat and structure shape energy demand.

In the founding concept

  • Urban canopy & building energy modeling (uWRF)
  • Heat fluxes from roofs, streets & walls
  • Energy demand forecasting under future climate (NYS, 2010–2050)
  • Resilient energy infrastructure under extreme weather

Underneath all of it

The same layer of atmosphere

Each of these depends on understanding the atmospheric boundary layer — its structure, its drivers, and how it changes between the coast, the city and the countryside.
